"As long as a man feels that he is the most important thing in the world, he cannot really appreciate the world around him. He is like a horse with blinders; all he sees is himself, apart from everything else."

What is the difference between a psychologist,
a psychiatrist and a psychotherapist?

Psychologist in Ústí nad Labem!

  • Psychiatrists are physicians. They treat brain diseases manifesting in the thinking, emotions, perception and behaviour of patients. A psychiatrist tries to influence the patent´s mental state through the body, therefore they most often prescribe medications.
  • Psychologists help by psychological means. They go through your problems with you and together you seek a solution. If the psychologist is not also a psychotherapist, he/she usually works as a consultant, e.g. gives recommendations. As the most important tool is an interview, a psychologist usually gives you more time than a psychiatrist.
  • Psychotherapists use, in addition to an interview, other methods the purpose of which is to help clients cope better with life situations and their own experiencing. Psychotherapy, in general, deals with the emotions of clients more deeply than consultancy, and therefore the therapist´s own life experience and skills play an important role in psychotherapy in addition to his theoretical knowledge. A psychotherapist does not give advice but leads a client to find the solution to his/her situation alone. For psychotherapy to be efficient, it is important that the client understands the psychotherapist, that they “go together” as humans. Beware of this fact when choosing your psychotherapist! A psychotherapist may be a psychologist, but also a psychiatrist and as well a person with a completely different education may become a psychotherapist if they go through a several-year self-experiencing psychotherapeutic training.
